Once upon a time, there was a village. Yeah, it looked just like all of the village in all the fairy tales with the really green grass, and the red roofs.
Anyway, in this particular village there lived a fool - well every village had them at the time. Their job was to jump out and surprise little girls with big smiles and do, well, generally foolish things, like beat himself over the head with a cricket bat. But anyway, everybody knew the fool was crazy, and every once in a while, he'd even give a fairly spectacular display of it.
Anytime this happened, the people in the village would just say, "Asshole!" and tell their children to look away ("If you don't look at it, son, it doesn't exist!").
And the fool would just look around, confused, scratch his head, and say, "Asshole?"
But generally speaking, the fool liked everyone and everyone pretty much liked the fool. He kept everybody happy.
Until one day, one of the villagers said, "Asshole, troll!"
And the fool looked up and said, "Asshole? Troll?" And this made the fool very unhappy.
Now this had some meaning to the fool. For everybody knew that trolls lived under bridges, jumped out to scare little girls and scream, "Asshole!" at all the villagers who passed by. And so the fool turned around and looked the villager square in the eye and yelled, "Asshole!" and limped off to the bridge on the other side of the village (you know, all villages had brooks and streams and things and bridges going over them. This is where the trolls union lived).
Anyway, he'd already gotten pretty good at what he did (scaring little girls and screaming, "Asshole!" at all the villagers who passed by.
Then one day, he jumped out to scare a little girl, and she said, "Mr., What'd you do that for Mr.?"
And the troll (used to be fool) just look confused, scratched his head, and said, "Because I'm supposed to? Because I'm a troll? And that's what trolls do? Don't they?"
And the little girl said, "They don't have to! Do they?"
And the troll said, "I don't know. Nobody's ever asked me that before!"
"Well do you?"
"UuHhMmm, I, I, guess not. But, if I didn't, what would I do instead?"
"I'm going to plant some seeds. Watch the flowers grow."
And so she did. And so he did. And very beautiful flowers they were too, I might add. You know the kind. The magic looking flowers in fairy tales.
And the villagers would cross the bridge and the troll would jump out, and the villagers would shout, "Asshole!". And the troll would say, "Look at my beautiful garden."
And the villagers would go, "HhhhUuuuuHhhhh?"
Pretty soon, the troll quit calling the villagers, "asshole!" and the villagers stopped calling the troll, "Asshole!" And soon after that, the little girl came back and said, "See, isn't that better? And the troll looked up, smiled and said, "Yes. Yes it is. Thank you veery much." And the little girl said, "For what?" "For the seeds." "You made them grow."
