Hatteras is a barrier island. It is, in-and-of-itself, a
60-mile long sandbar stretching along North Carolina's coast. It's where
the warm waters of the Gulf Stream from the south collide with the cooler
waters of the Labrador Current coming down from the north. The result can
often be visually quite spectacular at the spot known as Cape Point. The
inshore waters to the north of Cape Point can often run as much as five -
to ten degrees cooler than the waters to the south of the point. For
fishermen, this means that often you get both northern and southern
saltwater species of fish congregating at the same location.
With the changing seasons come changes in the fish populations, and
also changes in successful techniques to catch them. On these pages, you
will find TRUE fishing stories from Hatteras, with some pictures to
support them, and techniques for catching and cooking them. I hope that
you will enjoy them as much as I had in experiencing them and putting
these stories together.
