The Lure of Hatteras

One of the truly magnificent fishing spots in all of the universe, Cape Hatteras has along and well-deserved reputation as one of the best locations to catch trophy red drum, blue fish and striped bass. But what is often overlooked is the truly remarkable squat fishery. The local tackle shops try very hard to keep this secret for fear of disturbing this asset.

We took our writers and photographers to Buxton, NC in search of the elusive squat. We encountered some of the truly best squat-fishing in the world.

At Hatteras, they have elevated squat-fishing to an art form. It requires dedication and perseverence to achieve the status of "Zen-Master Squat". Greetings and welcome to the inaugural issue of SQUAT!. This is a concept piece designed answer one of the longest running, and most elusive of fishing questions, "Why can't I catch "squat?"

The intent of this publication is to promote the awareness of this sport by constantly seeking new and improved techniques, by quizing the specialists at length, and by focusing attention on those areas which may, at any given time, produce the best squat-fishing.

Squat fishing is a truly forgotten artform. It takes diligence, creativity, time, patience and a great deal of money to successfully snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

In this issue, we take you to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Legendary for its trophy drum, striper and blue fish, few have recognized the full potential of the squat fishery. We provide you with insighte into targeting NC squat, and include an interview with one of the truly great NC squat fishermen of all-time, Esteban de Jamonero.

de Jamonero is one of the few truly scientific practioneers in the world. His exploits are legendary. He has successfully targeted and caught trophy squat in the middle of a drum chew, a blue fish blitz and during annual runs of speckled trout. His insights can be key to, not only more productive, but more enjoyable squat fishing.

In future issues, we will be including "departments" for your letters and comments. We invite you to submit them through SQUAT!
